Hong Kong Customs today (April 29) foiled a drug trafficking attempt by a passenger at Hong Kong International Airport and seized 1.1 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $1.2 million. A 32-year-old man was arrested in the operation.

Customs officers this morning intercepted a passenger arriving from Venezuela at the arrival hall of the airport. The officers found the cocaine concealed in the false compartment of his rucksack.

The arrested man, who claimed to be a businessman, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (April 30).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
